| Mom May 21, 2005 05:12 PM PDT I remember this incident, Golda was totally hysterical and when she put her two hands together to show me how bid the spider was; I didn't believe it at first, I thought she was exaggerating. Well, this time she wasn't. I usually use my trusty flip-flops for dealing with roaches around the house, but judging by the size difference between the average roach and this creature, I decided that extreme measures were called for, hence the hammer. I also imagined that the spider's body would be very tough, and resistant to blows, like an armour. Much to my astonishment when I hesitantly rapped on it once with the back of the hammer, it immediately tumbled to the floor and all its legs came off in the process. It never even tried to scuttle away. Once the deed was done, I felt sorry for the poor creature, it didn't deserve to die just for being unwelcome in Golda's room. I suspected it posed no danger, despite its enormous size, but Golda was too terrified. Had I come accross it alone, I would have tried to study it quietly and make friends with it. I am quite fascinated by insects, and spiders are one of my favourites. Afterwards I found out that, just as I'd guessed, this kind of spider was perfectly harmless despite its size. Locally it's often seen in cowsheds, so one can wonder what exactly had attracted it to my daughter's room in the first place... | ||
